Hi, I’m Pancrazio! Originally I’m from Italy, but I currently work as a business executive in sunny California, USA.

I had always dreamed about visiting the Arctic since I was a child, watching polar bears, seals, and endless ice on TV. I wanted to travel somewhere very different and experience 24-hour daylight. Svalbard ticked all my boxes.

I didn’t want to visit a sensitive Arctic environment with a large group of tourists, as I felt this would distract from the experience. After some research, I came across Secret Atlas. Their Expedition Micro Cruises promised an intimate, immersive experience without the diluted feel of a larger ship.

I hadn’t been on an expedition cruise before, so everything was completely new. Every evening the expedition leader briefed us about the next day’s plans, which remained flexible due to Arctic weather. We received clear guidance about expected effort and shore visit lengths, and the onboard guides provided rich insights about the places we visited.

I found the small ship comfortable and robust. The lounge at the front, with wide windows, offered unobstructed views. Sitting there, warm and sheltered from the cold, while taking in the Arctic scenery, is a must-have experience for polar travel.

The group of only 12 guests created a sense of community. Travelling solo, I found the shared interest in exploring Svalbard helped us bond. We’ve stayed in touch since the trip. The small group also meant no waiting to go ashore or take turns; we truly shared every moment. The Captain even welcomed us on the bridge, enhancing our feeling of being part of the expedition.

Why visit Svalbard? For me, two reasons stand out:

1. The Ice: Being close to glacier fronts and the sea ice is awe-inspiring, impossible to capture fully in images or words.

2. The Wildlife: Svalbard is true wilderness. Unlike controlled national parks, here humans are merely visitors. Seeing polar bears and arctic foxes in their natural habitat created unforgettable moments. One highlight was watching a polar bear followed by an arctic fox—just like a scene from a nature documentary.

Another unforgettable moment was seeing polar bear tracks on floating ice alongside the ship, and discovering more tracks later.

A defining feature of this expedition was the freedom. There was no rigid itinerary, allowing the expedition leader to adjust plans based on conditions and ensure we made the most of every opportunity. It truly felt like a real expedition, surpassing my experiences in Africa and India.
