In this cinematic short film, marine researcher Paige and expedition partner Tim journey to the remote fjords of Svalbard on an Expedition Micro Cruise with Secret Atlas to discover what has never been seen before.
Using cutting-edge underwater technology, they descend into the benthic zone—over 100 metres below the surface—to document fragile marine ecosystems, monitor biodiversity, and uncover species potentially new to science.
But Arctic research is never predictable.
From extreme conditions and remote access challenges to near-disaster in the field, this film captures the reality of conducting science in one of the most hostile and rapidly changing environments on Earth.
The Arctic is warming faster than anywhere else on the planet. Yet, despite its global importance, we still know remarkably little about what exists beneath the ice.
Join the live virtual event: Under the Arctic — Beyond the Ice Go deeper into the film with Dr Paige Maroni and Tim Macdonald as they discuss their findings, how this research is shared onboard, and what it means for Arctic exploration.
