Megan Richardson’s Arctic Adventure: Svalbard Micro Cruise Experience
Following Her Compass to the Arctic
Megan Richardson, an adventurer from Melbourne, had always dreamed of seeing polar bears and traveling above the Arctic Circle. Inspired by previous trips to Iceland and East Greenland, she set her sights on Svalbard. While trips to the North Pole were beyond her budget, Svalbard offered the perfect mix of wildlife, wild landscapes, and adventure—accessible yet remote.
Discovering Secret Atlas through a Google search for photography-focused micro cruises, Megan knew their small-ship expeditions offered what she wanted most: flexibility, personal experiences, and avoidance of crowded tourist vessels.
First Impressions and Remote Wonder
Arriving in Longyearbyen, Megan was struck by Svalbard’s stark, snowy landscapes and sense of wildness. Unlike Iceland or Greenland, Svalbard’s fjords, glaciers, and remote environment offered a continuous sense of awe. She recalls numerous “pinch me” moments, whether preparing for a Zodiac excursion or simply observing the dramatic scenery.
Traveling with only 11 other guests allowed Megan to fully immerse herself in the Arctic. The small group size offered connection with fellow explorers and the freedom to experience every aspect of the environment without distraction or waiting.
Wildlife, Glaciers, and Small-Ship Adventure
Megan’s expedition brought her close to a range of Arctic wildlife: polar bears, belugas, seals, and Arctic foxes. Zodiac excursions offered moments of reflection and sensory immersion, such as listening to the ice crack in front of glaciers without a single photo taken—just present in the Arctic’s silence.
The micro cruise format meant unpacking once while exploring multiple locations each day, guided by experienced leaders who ensured safety, comfort, and enriching insights. This style of travel allowed Megan to see Svalbard in depth, capturing experiences inaccessible on larger vessels.
Transformative Moments and Future Expeditions
By the end of her first cruise, Megan was already planning a return, booking a second micro cruise to East Greenland mid-journey. Both trips exceeded expectations, reinforcing the value of small-ship, intimate travel.
Memorable highlights included reaching 80°N, witnessing glaciers calve, and observing polar bears in the wild. These experiences reshaped Megan’s approach to travel: she now prioritizes micro cruises that combine adventure, comfort, and connection with nature.
Megan is planning further Arctic explorations with Secret Atlas, including East Greenland, Antarctica, and South Georgia/Falklands—continuing her journey with a company she trusts to provide unique, responsible, and transformative polar experiences.
