A Land Forged by Ice and Time
When Bob Gilmore steps onto a glacier, he's not just walking on ice, he's traversing a living, breathing ecosystem that tells a story millions of years old.
With over 20 seasons exploring Antarctic regions and 15 seasons in Svalbard, Bob has transformed his childhood love for the outdoors into a mission of environmental education and exploration.
"I've always been interested in the bigger picture. It's not just about rocks or ice—it's about how everything is connected."
— Bob Gilmore
From Chicago's Forest Parks to countless Antarctic Expeditions, Bob's journey began in the urban forests of Chicago, where he first developed his passion for the natural world. A degree in forested ecosystems led him to the United States Forest Service in Oregon, where a chance encounter would change his life.
While working with forest rangers, he met professionals from the United States Antarctic Program and was immediately captivated. "I was flabbergasted," he recalls. "I thought, 'Where do I sign up?'" His curiosity took him to McMurdo Station and the South Pole, where he worked alongside scientists, learning glaciology and understanding the intricate relationships within polar ecosystems. This experience of working in the wilds of the polar regions was his calling.
Capturing Svalbard's landscapes
Bob's recent collaboration with filmmaker Taylor Gray resulted in a powerful documentary about Svalbard created for Secret Atlas entitled Svalbard: A Land of Rock and Ice.
"Taylor Gray is probably the best drone pilot I've ever worked with," Bob says. "We wanted to capture not merely the landscape, but its soul." Bob walking alone across the third-largest ice sheet on the planet, scarred with turquoise rivulets of meltwater, symbolises his approach to expedition leadership: intimate, educational, and respectful.
The Expedition Micro Cruise concept
Why small expeditions matter
Bob's philosophy perfectly aligns with Secret Atlas's mission. "With 12 guests, everyone becomes family," he explains. "Going on a Secret Atlas Expedition Micro Cruise, we're not tourists. We're explorers learning about the planet's most fragile ecosystems."
Bob sees each expedition as an opportunity to educate travellers about global interconnectedness.
“I enjoy working with Secret Atlas due to their high level of professionalism, flexibility, and allowing their experienced guides to make decisions as to the best routes.”
— Bob Gilmore
For Bob, understanding the planet starts at the microscopic level, with marine algae and phytoplankton blooming in the nutrient-rich waters of the Antarctic Convergence. These tiny organisms form the base of the food web and play a massive role in regulating the Earth’s climate. For Bob, it’s this connection, from the microcosm to the macrocosm, that fuels a lifelong fascination and a mission to share it with others.
He brings that passion aboard every Secret Atlas voyage. With just 12 guests, there’s space for real engagement: quiet moments on deck, in-depth conversations, and a front-row seat to the workings of the polar environment.
Bob explains how the formation of sea ice each winter helps drive powerful ocean currents that move heat, nutrients, and carbon across the globe. He points out how enormous tabular icebergs drifting silently through Antarctic waters are freshwater giants that shape ecosystems.
And then there are the ice cores. Bob once helped extract them during an Antarctic research expedition. These frozen records reveal layers of the Earth’s atmospheric history, tracing everything from ancient volcanic eruptions to long-term shifts in greenhouse gas levels. To Bob, each one is a direct message from the planet’s past.
With Bob as your guide, your expedition becomes an exploration of how the Earth functions, layer by layer, from the tiniest lifeforms to the deepest currents of planetary change. Discover our polar science expeditions below:
"Education is my passion. Once people understand, they'll be motivated to preserve these incredible places."

Svalbard, Greenland and beyond
It's never just about the destination, but the story each landscape tells. In Bob Gilmore, Secret Atlas has found more than an expedition leader. We've found a true environmental storyteller, bridging the gap between adventure and understanding.
Join Bob as Expedition Leader on some of our future adventures, including our Expedition Micro Cruises to Greenland, Svalbard, Antarctica and South Georgia.
