Set sail under the midnight sun, for unforgettable wildlife encounters in two of the Arctic’s wildest frontiers.
Experience the best of both worlds on this combined Svalbard and East Greenland summer expedition — an immersive journey through vast ice fjords, towering mountains, incredible wildlife, and some of the last true wildernesses on Earth.
Nature unlimited.
See the High Arctic archipelago’s famous wildlife against a pristine backdrop of fairytale fjords, calving glaciers, and snow-capped mountains. Witnessing this endlessly rich habitat – home to reindeer, whales, Arctic foxes, polar bears, and much more – illuminated by the midnight sun is, simply, one of the greatest shows in nature.
Your journey continues in the mythical Scoresbysund, the largest fjord system in the world, its labyrinthine pathways strewn with cathedral-size icebergs. Encounter the local wildlife, including musk ox, Arctic foxes, Arctic hares, and maybe even (though they are rare here) polar bears and narwhals.
Travelling with just 12 guests ensures genuine small-group exploration — fast Zodiac operations, flexible landings, and the freedom to respond to wildlife and weather conditions as they unfold.
Explore the Arctic ice edge under the midnight sun – the shifting boundary where pack ice meets open ocean and wildlife thrives
Summer is when Svalbard’s wildlife – from Arctic foxes to whales, migratory birds, and polar bears – is at its most abundant and most visible
Scout for iconic wildlife in the tundra of Greenland – musk oxen, seabirds, reindeer, polar bears – in their Arctic home.
Explore the monumental landscapes of Scoresbysund, the world’s largest fjord system with chance encounters with seals, narwhal or whales.
Sail beyond the 80° North in search of sparkling pack ice, crossing the Fram Strait and the Denmark Strait
Small-ship landing flexibility meets expedition-style comfort aboard the comfortable micro-expedition ship MV Freya
Opportunity to end your Arctic journey in Iceland for further exploration
“Secret Atlas provides the trip of a lifetime. If you are looking for a cruise that only has a small number of people, then this is a trip you can't go past.”
— JB, Secret Atlas guest in East Greenland
Every expedition leaves a mark. Discover honest reflections, unforgettable moments, and personal highlights shared by guests who have explored the polar regions with us.
We prefer to embrace spontaneity and make the most of every opportunity nature presents to us. This is how we believe a true, authentic expedition should run. After all, the thrill of adventuring into the unknown is more rewarding than a journey that runs on tracks!
So all our listed itineraries are for guidance only. The day-to-day activities may vary depending on the ice, the weather, and the wildlife. Landings are subject to site availability and permissions, and always in line with AECO regulations.
For even more flexibility, get in touch about making this a private yacht charter.

MV Freya is a classic expedition ship. The sturdy, ice-strengthened 1A hull makes her perfect for exploring the Arctic waters.
We’re fuelled by the long-lost spirit of adventure, guided by environmental and cultural responsibility, and committed to creating transformative travel experiences.
We’re pioneers of the Expedition Micro Cruise, offering the smallest group sizes at both poles. That means a flexible itinerary. It means more time exploring and photographing. It means a deeper connection with your team and the natural world.
We understand that, out here, less is more. Less waiting to board Zodiacs, more time ashore. Less strict itineraries, more adventure. Less crowd, more immersion.

Solo travellers are welcome on all our voyages. We often host solo travellers – the chances are you won’t be the only one. We offer the following accommodation options:
Single cabins (where available)
The option to share a twin cabin with another traveller of the same gender
The option to have your own double cabin for an additional supplement. Please contact us for this option as the price varies depending on trip and availability
To get the most from a Secret Atlas expedition, it’s important to be stable on your feet and able to undertake short hikes. But there’s no requirement to undertake any given activity, and we usually split into two groups: those who want to go to the top of the hill, and those who’d prefer a more leisurely stroll at the bottom (or a Zodiac cruise!).
This Svalbard and East Greenland expedition starts in Longyearbyen, Svalbard where you will board your Secret Atlas micro expedition vessel.
This Svalbard and East Greenland expedition ends in Akureyri, Iceland where you will disembark. Akureyri has an international airport and there are transport options to Reykjavík.
Unlike larger vessels with higher passenger capacities, our voyages are personal and unique in their approach. Travelling with a small group of guests means more time exploring, more flexibility, and less time waiting to board Zodiacs and go ashore.
Our small expedition vessels will get you closer to nature and more immersed in the landscape than larger ships, offering you a more transportative and transformative experience with no crowds or queuing.
Guests are not permitted to use drones during the expedition. In any case a drone is being used during your expedition, it will be for professional use only by a member of the Secret Atlas team with the required permissions.
Limitations are in place to protect the wildlife we encounter. Often, it is not possible to get up-close to the wildlife we see. For more information, check out the ‘Visitor Guidelines’.
It’s how we see the world.
Genuinely small group sizes at both poles, for the most intimate and transformative experience
Expedition leaders and guides with decades of polar experience and hundreds of expeditions between them
No queueing for Zodiac cruises and shore landings
Itineraries that evolve to maximise opportunities presented by ice, wildlife, and weather.
Comfortable accommodations, where the real luxury is the freedom and time to explore
We call our pioneering way of exploring the Expedition Micro Cruise. It forms the basis of all our adventures, including our photography expeditions and private charters.
Svalbard is an untamed Arctic wilderness, and on every expedition, we encounter different wildlife. In our opinion, it’s the best place in the High Arctic to see wildlife.
The chances of encountering wildlife are very high, and on previous Svalbard and Spitsbergen cruises, we have seen walruses, Arctic foxes, whales, polar bears, Svalbard reindeer, and a variety of birdlife.
The distinctive and dignified musk ox is commonly sighted during Expedition Micro Cruises to Greenland. Polar bears roam these lands, but sightings are not guaranteed – after all, they have plenty of habitat to explore on the world’s biggest island!
Narwhals are another iconic Greenland sight, though the “unicorn of the sea” can be elusive. Far easier to spot are the large seal population and a great breadth of Arctic birds, including puffins, guillemots, and kittiwakes.
