Neko Harbour | Gentoo Penguins & Glaciers in Antarctica

This small inlet is located on the west coast of Graham Land, on Andvord Bay. Since it is connected to the Antarctic Peninsula, a landing on the harbour is called a continental landing. On its west, lies Paradise Harbour, another popular destination for adventurers in Antarctica.

History of Neko Harbour

Neko Harbour was discovered by Adrien de Gerlache, a Belgian explorer who led an Antarctic Expedition between 1897-99. It was named after a Norwegian whaling ship that used to operate in these waters in the early 20th century.

In 1949, an Argentine refuge, Captain Fliess Refuge, was established on the island. It was maintained by the Argentine Navy and supported multiple Antarctic expeditions. In 2010 the hut was damaged by weather and abandoned remains of it can still be seen.

Wildlife at Neko Harbour

The prime attraction of Neko Harbour is the colony of gentoo penguins. While the penguin colonies are located on the hillside, you can hear them chattering even before landing.

The views of the gentoo rookery with the majestic glacier in the background are a favourite shot for wildlife photographers. In the right month, you will find penguin chicks playing around.

Beyond the penguins, southern giant petrels can be seen scavenging around Neko Harbor. Other seabirds you may find are the kelp gulls and the ever-hungry skuas on the prowl. Weddell seals, leopard seals, and fur seals are also found hauling out on the beach.

The waters around the harbour also provide excellent opportunities to observe whales from close range. Humpbacks are the most commonly viewed whale species. With luck, you might spot minke whales as well.

Neko Harbour’s glacier

The thick layers of ice covering the cliffs and the fissured glacial tongues coming down to touch the water are the first things that you notice in Neko Harbour. The blue-hued beauty of the glaciers around the harbour, while breathtakingly beautiful, is not without hazards. If you notice a few small chanks breaking off the glacier, chances are that a large chunk will soon calve off.

Usually, large chunks of ice fall into the water with a cracking roar, creating large waves. To reduce any risks from such hazardous waves, the beach area is avoided by visitors. At times, avalanches roar down from the high glaciers.

Facts about Neko Harbour

The incredibly beautiful bay surrounded by glaciers, along with the unique snow and ice formations make Neko Harbour the perfect introductory chapter to an Antarctica voyage. A short hike to the top of a hill will provide you with spectacular views of the surrounding area.

There are strict landing requirements in place and no more than 100 visitors are allowed at a time. While there are no closed areas, visitors are expected to avoid the sandy areas of the beach as it is an access route for the penguins.

Highlights close to Neko Harbour

There are a few spots around Neko Harbour that you can visit during an Antarctic cruise.

Astrolabe Island

This rocky island is a dramatic vantage point for great views and a popular zodiac cruise location. However, the landing can be difficult due to its exposed location resulting in rough tides and swells.

Damoy Point

Located on the west coast of Wiencke Island this rocky isthmus is home to gentoo penguins, Antarctic terns, kelp gulls, and the Subantarctic skua.

Cuverville Island

This small island located at the entrance of the Errera Channel is mostly covered by a permanent ice cap. It is home to around 6500 breeding pairs of the gentoo penguins and is marked as an Important Bird Area.

Danco Island, Errera Channel

Another stunning spot in the Errara Channel, Danco Island has a hill that offers fantastic views of the surrounding area. It is also home to a large colony of gentoo penguins.
