Sense of exploration

Cruising in Greenland gives you the feeling of entering another world far from civilisation. The isolation and pristine nature of the environment create a sense of adventure and exploration. You can expect to explore the shores and coastlines by Zodiac in seldom-visited places, with some of the most gorgeous views on the planet.

Marine life

The ocean’s depths teem with fascinating creatures here. Narwhals, with their long pointed unicorn tooth (sometimes more than a metre long), and sleek white belugas whales with their melon-shaped heads used for echolocation, grace the Greenlandic coast. A parade of cetaceans is found here, from blue whales to fin whales, right whales, humpbacks, and orcas.

Perhaps the most unusual of all is the Greenland shark, among the largest carnivorous shark species. But what really sets them apart is their mysteriously long life span. Some individuals are believed to live for over 400 years, making them one of the longest-lived vertebrates on Earth.

Northern lights

Greenland is one of the prime destinations for witnessing the mesmerising natural phenomenon known as the northern lights, or aurora borealis. On our Scoresbysund cruises, the northern lights are seen from September onwards.

Local ways of life

Greenland is home to a rich tapestry of local cultures, primarily influenced by the indigenous Inuit population. These cultures have evolved over centuries in response to the challenges presented by the Arctic environment. To share a different culture and perspective to our own is a truly thought-proving experience.

Icebergs galore

Greenland is famous for its impressive icebergs, some of which are up to 500 metres tall! These icebergs result from the continuous movement and calving of glaciers. Ice breaks off the Greenland ice cap and is left floating in the surrounding waters.

Greenland ice cap

The Greenland ice cap, also known as the Greenland ice sheet, is one of the two largest ice sheets in the world, the other being the Antarctic ice sheet. Covering approximately 80% of Greenland's surface, it is a vast expanse of ice, reaching thicknesses of up to three kilometres (1.9 miles) in some areas.

Greenland cruise 2027 FAQs

When is the best time of year to take a cruise to Greenland?

We explore the east coast of Greenland, in particular the Scoresbysund fjord system and the Northeast Greenland National Park. The east coast is blocked by ice earlier in the cruising season, so our expeditions operate from August to October when sea ice is at its lowest level.

Sail under the midnight sun during August, the best time for wildlife in the national park. September and October are the best months for witnessing the mesmerising northern lights over Scoresbysund.

Where do your cruises to Greenland depart from?

All our Greenland expeditions start with a charter flight from Keflavik International Airport, Iceland, to Nerlerit Inaat Airport (Constable Point Airport) in East Greenland, where you will board your Secret Atlas micro expedition vessel.

What is an Expedition Micro Cruise?

It’s how we see the world.

·  Genuinely small group sizes at both poles, for the most intimate and transformative experience

·  Expedition leaders and guides with decades of polar experience and hundreds of expeditions between them

·  No queueing for Zodiac cruises and shore landings

·  Itineraries that evolve to maximise opportunities presented by ice, wildlife, and weather.

·  Comfortable accommodations, where the real luxury is the freedom and time to explore

We call our pioneering way of exploring the Expedition Micro Cruise. It forms the basis of all our adventures, including ourphotography expeditions and private charters.

Why is an Expedition Micro Cruise or small ship cruise the best way to explore Greenland?

Unlike larger vessels with higher passenger capacities, our voyages are personal and unique in their approach. Travelling with a small group of guests means more time exploring, more flexibility, and less time waiting to board Zodiacs and go ashore.

Our small expedition vessels will get you closer to nature and more immersed in the landscape than larger ships, offering you a more transformative experience with no crowds or queuing.

How does a small ship experience in Greenland compare to other cruises?

Non-expedition cruises on regular cruise ships don’t offer shore landings and often only visit a couple of Greenlandic towns, which means they miss out on lots of the adventure. The average cruise ship doing non-expedition cruises takes 2000 passengers.

A number of companies offer expedition cruises in Greenland with landings on larger vessels. The average number of passengers these ships take is over 200. In our opinion, that is too many people to be landing at sensitive places in the Arctic at one time.

Many companies advertise small ship cruises to Greenland, but their definition of a ‘small ship’ varies and can range from 250 guests down to 12. The difference between travelling with 250 guests and 36 or 12 guests is huge.

Our Expedition Micro Cruises to Greenland are the way they should be: intimate and low-impact.
